In this guide
A budget does not need a daily interrogation. One short weekly check can help you notice a missing purchase, a bill you forgot or a goal that no longer fits your priorities. Choose a reasonably quiet moment and aim to leave with one useful decision, rather than a perfect dashboard.
The ten-minute structure below is a suggested allocation. Your first review may take longer, especially if you are importing old records. FinTracker brings the ledger, category budgets and goals into one iPhone app; the routine also works with another tracker or a notebook.
Minutes 0–2: complete recent records
Look back over the week and add purchases that are missing, including cash. Check amounts, currencies, refunds and categories. A transfer between your own accounts is not the same as a new expense; avoid recording the same payment twice after an import.
In FinTracker, manual entries use the local ledger. Voice and receipt AI are optional online tools: review their suggestions before saving. If you are starting from a statement, follow the import guide and reconcile the result before trusting totals.
Minutes 2–4: inspect category spending
Open the categories that influence your next few days. Compare recorded spending with the period’s budget, then ask whether the remaining amount fits what is still planned. A low total might reflect missing entries rather than a particularly inexpensive week.
If a category consistently needs more, adjust the plan deliberately instead of hiding a purchase elsewhere. Keep the same time period when comparing totals. For a first plan, use the monthly budget guide.
Minutes 4–6: check upcoming costs
Look at actual upcoming bills and commitments in your calendar, statements or records. Include irregular costs such as a yearly renewal, a journey or a gift. Do not assume a tracker sees every subscription or bill automatically.
Separate what is due soon from a long-term wish. If the coming week is unusually expensive, make room before spending the apparent remainder of another category. The goal is a clear decision, not predicting every possible purchase.
Minutes 6–8: reconcile savings progress
Check that each recorded saved amount matches money you can actually identify. Update a goal after setting money aside; do not count the same funds toward several purposes. FinTracker records progress but does not hold savings or initiate bank transfers.
One review, three useful numbers

- Groceries this month€400 − €230 = €170Budget minus recorded spending: check missing entries before treating this as available.
- Holiday goal after a real contribution€300 + €60 = €360Record the additional €60 only after you have genuinely set it aside.
- Progress toward a €1,200 target30%€360 ÷ €1,200 × 100. Goal progress does not move money or change a spending budget.
Here, €170 is the remaining grocery budget before any missing or future costs. The €360 holiday amount is a separate goal record. Increasing that goal does not automatically subtract €60 from a spending category. The multiple-goal guide explains how to keep these records consistent.
Minutes 8–10: choose one adjustment
Finish with something concrete: correct a category limit, postpone a nonessential purchase or revise a goal date. Write down what you changed and why. If the numbers do not reconcile, make that the next task rather than inventing a balancing entry.
Keep the next check at a convenient time. A useful routine survives a busy week; it does not require a streak or a claim that every minute saved turns into more money.

FinTracker is our first choice for a personal iPhone routine with local records, budgets and savings goals. Adding or editing requires active trial or subscription access. If you are still choosing a tool, compare budgeting apps and savings goal apps, then start with one ordinary week.
