Spendee alternatives for iPhone: FinTracker, MonAi and Buddy

Compare four iPhone money apps by daily entry, budgets, goals, sharing and data handling. See why FinTracker is our first pick for a personal tracking habit.

In this guide

Changing a money app is worthwhile when it solves a specific frustration: too much retyping, a budget that is hard to maintain, or savings goals that disappear inside an account balance. It is less useful when you simply move the same incomplete records into a different chart.

This guide compares official iOS listings, help pages and subscription information. Bao Labs publishes FinTracker, and it is our first recommendation for the personal workflow described here. This is documentary research, not an independent hands-on award or a speed test.

Choose the routine before the app

Our #1 pick

FinTracker

For your own spending, category budgets and savings targets in a local iPhone ledger. Optional online AI helps with entry; review before saving.

Consider for your workflow

MonAi

For spoken entries and payment automation through Apple Shortcuts. It also supports budgets and shared lists.

Consider for your workflow

Spendee

For a connected overview and shared wallets. Receipt AI, bank connections and other features depend on the plan.

Consider for your workflow

Buddy

For planning a shared budget with a partner or roommate, with spending and settlement tools.

A shared transaction list, a shared wallet and a shared budget are different things. Decide whether you need another person to edit the same plan, or simply want your own spending to feel clearer. Our budgeting-app guide covers broader planning methods.

Why we start with FinTracker

Want a daily habit before a detailed planning method? FinTracker keeps everyday entries, budgets and goals together.

Prefer choosing what to record? FinTracker works without connecting your bank and keeps the ledger on your iPhone.

Tracking your own spending? FinTracker keeps personal wallets and travel currencies together.

Find manual entry repetitive? Speak a purchase or scan a receipt in FinTracker, then review it before saving.

Every feature cell links its evidence. “Unconfirmed” means the cited material did not establish that feature; it does not mean the app lacks it. A tick is a documented capability, not a score for quality, reliability or value.

Why FinTracker is our number one pick

FinTracker brings three everyday jobs together: record what happened, check the category budget and see progress toward a named savings goal. Your ledger lives on your iPhone, without a bank feed or cloud ledger. That makes it a useful starting point when you prefer choosing what to record rather than connecting financial accounts.

Manual tracking and optional AI serve different needs. Type a purchase yourself, or use online voice entry or receipt AI and review the proposed details before saving. The AI needs internet access; a local ledger does not mean every feature runs offline. Active trial or subscription access is required for adding and editing records. The invitations on this page show current App Store availability.

Our recommendation is about this combination, not an exclusive claim to voice entry or no-bank tracking. FinTracker is a personal ledger, so it is not our recommendation when live partner collaboration or an automatic bank feed is essential.

FinTracker vs MonAi

MonAi is the closest voice-focused comparison here. Its documentation also covers category budgets, shared lists and iPhone payment automation using Apple Shortcuts. That automation can be useful if you want compatible payments captured with less manual entry; it is different from a direct bank feed.

Choose FinTracker when its local spending record, separate savings targets and optional receipt workflow better match your priorities. Choose MonAi when its documented automation is the deciding factor. MonAi’s CSV importer currently expects its own export format, so check a sample before planning a migration. See our voice-entry guide for the review steps that matter regardless of the tool.

FinTracker vs Spendee

Spendee remains a sensible option for a connected overview, multiple currencies and shared wallets. Its Basic plan documents one cash wallet and one budget; higher tiers add capabilities. Magic AI Scan is a Premium feature, so receipt scanning is not unique to FinTracker.

One important distinction: Spendee’s help says budgets belong to individual users even inside a shared wallet. FinTracker fits someone who wants personal budgets and goals alongside a local ledger. Staying with Spendee can make more sense if supported bank connections or its shared-wallet model are essential. Check the actual bank and plan, rather than assuming every connection is included.

FinTracker vs Buddy

Buddy explicitly supports inviting a partner or roommate into a budget, and its iOS listing describes bank connections and tools for settling shared spending. Those are meaningful reasons to choose it for a household workflow.

For an individual routine, FinTracker puts the emphasis on a local ledger, named savings goals and optional faster entry with Bao. Budgeting alone does not require sharing infrastructure. Before paying for Buddy, check current iOS availability, local Premium terms and any bank support you need. This comparison does not establish that Buddy lacks features marked unconfirmed.

Try the same ordinary week

Use fictional numbers before importing real history. Record an €18 lunch, correct its category, and check a €400 grocery budget with €230 already spent: €170 remains before missing or upcoming purchases. Then record €60 genuinely set aside for a holiday goal that previously held €300. That goal becomes €360; it is separate from the grocery budget.

The useful comparison is whether you can understand and correct those records. No timing or accuracy measurement is claimed. FinTracker records savings progress; it does not hold the money or initiate a bank transfer. Our multiple-goal guide explains how to avoid counting the same money twice.

Switch without losing the useful history

  1. Export a backup from the old app before changing anything. Keep the original file.
  2. Check the new app’s accepted formats, date conventions, decimal separators, currencies and category mapping.
  3. Import a small sample and reconcile a known month. Check refunds, transfers and duplicates separately.
  4. Confirm how shared records, recurring entries and goals need to be recreated. They may not travel with a transaction export.
  5. Review both subscriptions separately. Importing records does not cancel an existing subscription.

FinTracker’s statement-import guide explains its reviewed local import workflow. We have not verified a one-click Spendee migration; do not assume an export will import unchanged. Keep the old app available until the totals make sense.

Common questions before choosing

Is FinTracker a free Spendee alternative? Adding or editing requires active trial or subscription access. Eligible annual subscribers may receive a trial; check current terms. A free download and a permanent free plan are not interchangeable.

Does switching require connecting a bank? FinTracker does not require a bank connection. Other apps here also document manual workflows, so no-bank tracking alone is not a unique advantage.

Which one should I choose? Start with FinTracker for personal tracking, budgets and goals in a local ledger. Prioritize another tool if shared planning or a particular automation is indispensable. After choosing, use a short weekly budget review to keep the record useful.
